Opening the doors to communication.

Speech therapy is an essential component to the home health care team. A Speech Language Pathologist (SLP), or speech therapist, can assess, diagnose, and treat a wide array of speech disorders, including cognitive, language, communication, and swallowing disorders.

Often times after a medical event such as a stroke, a patient may experience the inability to communicate, deficits in memory and cognition and/or difficulty swallowing. At Golden Age Home Health Care, we understand the significance that communication has on your quality of life and the frustration that these deficits can cause. Deficits in any one of these areas can have profound effects on your ability to perform simple day to day tasks like communicating your wants and needs, comprehension of conversation, talking on the phone or communicating with your loved ones.

A speech therapist can work with you to learn compensatory strategies and practice oral motor exercises, as well as modify and advance your diet to the least restrictive diet as able. Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, is a common diagnosis after a stroke, brain injury, many neurological events/diseases or a prolonged illness, and can put you at risk for weight loss and aspiration (food or liquid entering the airway). A speech therapist can work with you to learn compensatory strategies, practice oral motor exercises, modify your diet and to advance you to the least restrictive diet as able.

These are some of the skills that a speech therapist can help address:

  • Communication (speech, articulation, voice, alternate means of communication)
  • Language (word finding difficulty, comprehension, reading, writing)
  • Cognitive Skills (memory, problem solving, planning, inattention)
  • Dysphagia/Swallowing Difficulty (physical and sensory components, diet modification, oral motor exercises, compensatory strategies)
  • Electrical stimulation of swallow (VitalStim)
